Women, children starve as men snatch their food

SUKKUR: It is survival of the fittest in relief camps as men snatch food and water from unaccompanied women and children. These unprotected families are left to fend for themselves and sometimes they miss out of meals three times a day.

The Pakistan armed forces cannot seem to find a solution to the problem. “There is no way we can ensure that women and children are receiving the relief goods. Somewhere on their way back, a group of men snatch the food from them,” explained Flight Lieutenant Mubasher. “We do not have enough human resources to handle the situation. There is no way to ensure foolproof ration distribution.” Read more »

The legal bias against women

By Erum Sajjad Gull
The Constitution makes it mandatory for all laws of Pakistan to be in conformity with Islamic laws. Therefore, in case any of them is not, it would be struck down by the courts. Muslim family laws that eventually emerged during the 2nd and the 3rd centuries of the Hijri calendar were mainly influenced by the socio-economic, political and indigenous tribal values of those times. During the developmental phases of the classical legal schools Islamic jurists frequently adopted a patriarchal approach towards women’s rights and family laws.

Benazir’s daughter Bakhtawar to enter ‘practical politics’

ISLAMABAD: Slain former Pakistani premier Benazir Bhutto’s daughter Bakhtawar has decided to enter “practical politics” even as her brother Bilawal ruled out launching his political career so that he could focus on continuing his education.

Advisor to the Sindh Chief Minister and a loyalist of the Bhutto-Zardari family, Sharmilla Faruqui, has said in a statement that Bakhtawar’s decision to enter “practical politics” augurs well, especially for the women in the country.

“This is also very good for the patriotic, democracy-loving and pro-masses people,” she said.

Bakhtawar, best known for dabbling in music, will “carry forward the mission of her great mother” and serve the backward and downtrodden segments of society and women, Faruqui said.

She claimed “the day is not far” when Bakhtawar will promote democratic values and ensure inclusion of women in national development. Read more »

Bakhtawar another dupatta-wearing politician in making?

ISLAMABAD: The Edinburgh-educated rapper daughter of slain former premier Benazir Bhutto and President Asif Ali Zardari seems set to perpetuate the image of dupatta-wearing, conservative women politicians of Pakistan.

Just like her Hermes scarf wearing mother Benazir, a dupatta is always neatly pinned on 20-year-old Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari’s head to underline her Islamic identity; even as many from her generation see it as a cumbersome relic.

It is strange to see Bakhtawar, who is an aspiring rapper and has devoted a few songs to her mother, with her head covered by a dupatta.

In all her public appearances Bakhtawar has the dupatta in place, even as in her profile picture on her personal music page she is shown wearing a cap and not a dupatta. Read more »

Pak women still facing harassment despite legislation

A survey has found that crimes against Pakistani women are still continuing at workplaces, as the provincial government is unable to implement the Protection Against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2009.

The survey found that there are still complaints from female government and private sector employees about the abusive behaviour of their male colleagues as well as senior officers, the Daily Times reported.

They said, on condition of anonymity, that some officers deliberately used tactics to block their salaries, benefits, promotions as well as transfers and postings unnecessarily, seeking ‘undue favours’ from them. Read more »
