Suicide bomber kills 23, wounded 20 in DI Khan hospital explosion: IG NWFP

A powerful suicide blast ripped through the crowded Emergency Ward of District Headquarters Hospital here Tuesday, killing at least 23 people and wounding another 20, IGP NWFP Malik Naveed told reporters. The blast took place when activists of a religious sect and relatives of victim, Basit Shah who was shot dead by unknown gunmen near Faqiri gate here were gathered at gate of Emergency Ward of the hospital to protest the cold blooded murder, he added. However independence sources claimed that 25 people were killed and as many injured in the deadly explosion.

Ruling alliance MNAs demand trial of Musharraf, Opposition calls for burying the past

Legislators from the Treasury Benches on Tuesday demanded for trial of the former President Pervez Musharraf as National Assembly on Tuesday continued debate on his resignation as President on August 18 while the opposition MNAs said the country should move forward by burying the past.

Discussing the resignation of former President Pervez Musharraf, MNA Akram Masih Gill said he appreciate Pervez Musharraf’s decision to safeguard rights of women and minorities.

Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf, the dictator who reinvented himself as a U.S. ally against terrorism, resigned to avoid facing impeachment charges for illegally seizing power and stifling economic growth.

“This is not time for individual bravado. I lose or win in impeachment proceedings, the Pakistani nation will be the loser,” Musharraf, 65, said in a televised address to the nation. “After taking advice from my supporters and friends, I have decided to resign in the best interests of the nation.”

Saudi spy chief meets Musharraf, Nawaz Sharif

LAHORE: Saudi Intelligence chief Prince Muqran reportedly met President Pervez Musharraf in Islamabad and delivered him an important message from Saudi King Abdullah, Geo News reported on Friday.

According to the channel, Saudi Arabia wanted to play its role in Pakistan’s present political circumstances and it sent Muqran to Islamabad for reconciliation between Musharraf and the ruling coalition.

Singh says terrorists harming friendship with Pakistan

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Friday that terrorist incidents such as the attack on Delhi’s embassy in Kabul were intended to harm friendship with Pakistan, but he also urged Islamabad to do more to thwart them.

“Our goal in South Asia is to seek a peaceful, stable and prosperous neighbourhood,” Mr Singh said in his traditional address from the 17th century Red Fort.

Pakistan Says 460 Militants, 22 Troops Killed in Bajaur

Pakistani officials say security forces have killed at least 460 al-Qaida-linked militants in a tribal region bordering Afghanistan. VOA’s Ayaz Gul reports, the week-long clashes also have left 22 troops dead and forced more than 200,000 people to flee to safer areas.
The fighting is taking place in the volatile northwestern Bajaur tribal region, which is regarded as a stronghold for Taliban and al-Qaida militants.

New Zealand remain concerned over Pakistan security

New Zealand’s cricketers remain concerned over the security situation in Pakistan ahead of next month’s Champions Trophy, players’ association chief Heath Mills said on Saturday.

An International Cricket Council (ICC) taskforce and Pakistan coach Geoff Lawson spoke to the New Zealand squad in Christchurch on Thursday to update them on the state of affairs in the host country.

President Pervez Musharraf fought back Friday against politicians who had said he would resign rather than face impeachment charges, saying through his chief political supporter that he will challenge the charges when they are brought to parliament.
Politicians across all parties, however, characterized the public insistence by Musharraf, a former military man, as a kind of last stand that cannot be maintained under the political reality that almost all of his support has evaporated.

Pakistan’s independence day starts with a bang

Pakistan marked the 60th anniversary of its independence today amid a crisis facing the country’s American-allied president who faces growing pressure from militants and opposition politicians.
In the capital, Islamabad, 31 artillery guns boomed at daybreak, marking the start of ceremonies to celebrate Aug. 14, 1947, when British colonial rulers granted independence to the subcontinent.

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan was then created by the partition of Hindu-dominated India.

In Karachi, a ceremony was held by military cadets at the mausoleum of Quaid-e-Mohammed Ali Jinnah, Pakistan’s founder.
