Pakistan, UN agree on Bhutto probe

Pakistan has reached an understanding with the UN on an investigation of the killing of Benazir Bhutto.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and UN chief Ban Ki-moon last night agreed on the nature and composition of an independent panel to probe the death.

A UN statement said the deal included funding, unhindered access to all sources of relevant information and elements to safeguard ‘the objectivity, impartiality and independence’ of the commission.

It said Mr Ban told Mr Qureshi during their meeting that further consultation with Pakistan and others within the Organisation would be required.

Last month Pakistan’s new government officially asked the world body to set up an international panel to identify the culprits, perpetrators, organisers and financiers behind the assassination last December.

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was killed in a gun and suicide bomb attack on 27 December in Rawalpindi.
