President General Pervez Musharraf Wednesday said he firmly believes that the three pillars of the state must work in harmony within their constitutional responsibilities to ensure political stability and sustained economic growth for the country. He said people of Pakistan need peace and security and opportunities to earn livelihood for themselves and their families. The forthcoming electoral process must, therefore, be completed peacefully, freely and fairly and a peaceful democratic transfer of power should follow, he said while talking to a group of Senators belonging to PML and allied parties at a dinner hosted by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz at the PM House this evening.
PML President Ch. Shujaat Hussain was also present on the occasion.
The President expressed the confidence that the Senate, representing equally all the federating units, would provide the much needed continuity to the political system as the nation moves through the forthcoming Presidential and general elections.
The President said he is equally confident that the judiciary and the executive would also perform their constitutional roles in moving Pakistan forward on the democratic path and help maintain and even accelerate the economic gains that have been achieved during the past eight years.
Referring to his own re-election, the President said that he will do so strictly within the Constitution and within the parameters of the judgement of the honourable Supreme Court on the subject.
President Musharraf said he had endeavoured to bring political and economic stability in the country.
Had his government not taken difficult decisions in the first few years of its assumption of office, Pakistan today would have been in an unimaginable economic and political difficulty.
He complimented Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and his team on helping him take the country out of the economic disaster in which it had been thrown by the previous rulers.
The President assured the Senators that the next five years will see Pakistan enter yet another phase of progress and development with the benefits going down to the poor and the underprivileged.
In this regard, he also declared that construction would begin on the mega water reservoir projects in the next five years with one of the major new dams being completed before 2015.
The President commended the Senators on having maintained strong democratic traditions in the conduct of the Senate business.
He reiterated his belief in strengthening the democratic institutions which, he emphasized, could alone provide the required strength to the economy and resultant relief to the poor masses who had suffered the most during the past.
Earlier, addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said the upcoming elections of the President would be held as per provisions of the Constitution.
He said the leadership provided by President General Pervez Musharraf has enabled democracy to flourish in Pakistan at the national, provincial and local levels.
The stature of Pakistan in the world has risen due to the leadership provided by the President.
He further said the national and provincial assemblies for the first time in the country’s history are completing their terms which augur well for the future of democracy in Pakistan.
The ruling coalition has given continuity and consistency of policies to the country and this has allowed growth, progress and prosperity.
The Senators expressed full support for government’s policies and said the people of Pakistan want this era of prosperity to continue.
They said that the election of the President and the subsequent general elections would strengthen democracy in the country, thus creating a healthy environment for the future of Pakistan.
