Leading Pakistan Channel Fears Closure
By admin | April 24, 2007
Popular Pakistan TV channel Aaj fears government closure for its coverage of the growing controversy over the suspension of the country’s chief justice.
The channel has received a legal notice that accuses it of not securing permission to broadcast and for allegedly inciting violence in its reporting, the BBC reported Monday. The channel has denied the charges.
“We have done nothing wrong and have nothing to fear,” Arshad Zuberi, managing director of Aaj, told the BBC. The Zuberi family also runs the Business Recorder, Pakistan’s respected financial newspaper.
The public furor stems from last month’s suspension of Chief Justice Ifthikar Chaudhry by Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf allegedly for abusing his position. The suspension sparked public protests throughout the country.
The offices of another channel, Geo, were attacked last month by police. Musharraf apologized for the conduct of police and said freedom of the press would be protected, the BBC report said.
